Fiber optic design as covered in this course refers to the specialized processes leading to a
successful installation and operation of a fiber optic network.  Design requires working
with higher level network and cable plant designers such as the architects and engineers
overseeing a major project or contractors involved with building the projects. Other
groups like engineers or designers involved in aspects of project design such as security,
CATV or industrial system designers or specialized designers like BICSI RCDDs for
premises cabling may also be overseeing various parts of the project that involves the
design and installation of fiber optic cable plants and systems.

Designers must have an in-depth knowledge of fiber optic components and systems and
installation processes as well as all applicable standards, codes and any other local
regulations.  The purpose of this presentation is to cover the issues appropriate to and
specific to fiber optic cable plant and network design. Those involved in fiber optic project
design should already have some background in fiber optics, such as having completed a
FOA CFOT course and certification, and may have other training in the specialties of cable
plant design such as electrical contracting apprenticeship, the BICSI RCDD, SCTE or
ISA training etc.

Prerequisites: Anyone taking this course should already be familiar with fiber optic
technology and installation. Good preparation includes having already taken a basic
course in fiber optics or having acquired a FOA CFOT, SCA CCT or BICSI RCDD
certification. Without some knowledge on fiber technology and installation, much of the
material here will be hard to comprehend or require extensive outside study.
