California’s fiber optic industry is hiring. You can earn three FOA certifications in one week.

Why Fiber Optics. Why California. Why Now.
Federal BEAD funding for California, the largest state allocation in the country
New fiber locations AT&T is building in California by 2030
Fiber technician pay range in California
California is in the middle of the largest broadband buildout in its history. The state was awarded $1.86 billion in federal BEAD funding, the single largest state allocation in the country, and its deployment plan was approved by the CPUC in December 2025. That federal money stacks on top of California’s own programs: the $3.25 billion Middle-Mile Broadband Initiative, an open-access backbone with more than 3,300 miles already built, and the $2 billion Last Mile Federal Funding Account, which has already awarded roughly $1.2 billion across 122 projects.
Private carriers are moving just as fast. AT&T committed $19 billion to its California networks through 2030, reaching more than 4 million additional fiber locations. Race Communications kicked off a 9,000-location build in Madera in June 2026, part of $200 million underway this year. Sonic is extending gigabit fiber across the Bay Area and entered the Los Angeles metro for the first time. All of that fiber needs people to splice, pull, and install it. California fiber technician roles pay $19 to $43 an hour, with AT&T, Frontier, Charter Spectrum, Comcast, Sonic, Lumen, MasTec, and Dycom all hiring across the state. Nationally, the Fiber Broadband Association projects the industry needs 30,000 more technicians and 28,000 construction workers just to execute currently funded buildouts.
